Gregorio del Pilar (November 14, 1875 – December 2, 1899) was a Filipino general during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine–American War. He is remembered as one of the youngest generals in the Philippine Revolutionary Army, earning the moniker "Goyo" or "Boy General" due to his youthful appearance and bravery.
Del Pilar initially studied at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. However, his studies were interrupted as he became involved in the growing revolutionary movement against Spanish colonial rule.
He played a crucial role in the Katipunan revolution in Bulacan, showcasing his military skills and courage early on. His successes quickly gained him recognition and promotions within the revolutionary ranks. One of his early significant contributions was his involvement in the surrender of Spanish soldiers in Bulacan.
During the Philippine Revolution, Del Pilar distinguished himself in various battles, becoming a trusted officer of President Emilio Aguinaldo.
Following the declaration of Philippine independence, the Philippine-American War erupted. Del Pilar was tasked with defending the northern approaches to Aguinaldo's headquarters in Northern Luzon.
His most famous, yet tragic, stand was at the Battle of Tirad Pass (also known as the Battle of Pasong Tirad). There, he and a small contingent of Filipino soldiers bravely defended the pass against the pursuing American forces, allowing Aguinaldo to escape. Despite putting up a valiant fight, Del Pilar and most of his men were killed in action.
Del Pilar's sacrifice at Tirad Pass solidified his status as a national hero in the Philippines, symbolizing courage, patriotism, and dedication to the cause of freedom. He is often seen as a symbol of the idealism and determination of the young Filipinos who fought for their country's independence.
